About Fabulous Marines

At its core, Fabulous Marines is a group of artists from the miniature tabletop community. We love this community and believe it should be a welcoming place for anyone. During the month of June, in honor of pride month, we are promoting festivities to paint models ready for a virtual pride parade and raising money for The Trevor Project.

Participants are encouraged to grab a model (*any* model, including busts, animal companions, valorous knights, pride-themed terrain, etc.) and get it ready for our fabulous virtual pride parade!

The reference to the popular tabletop wargame merely resulted from community discussion, but the true focus is the safety and acceptance people seek in all facets of the tabletop gaming hobby spaces.

Content creators raise money on their platforms, we share the community’s painting progress on social media, and some participants auction off their finished models.

Answers to Common Questions

What is the Fabulous Marines mission?

Fabulous Marines promotes the inclusivity and acceptance of LGBTQ+ members in our minipainting and wargaming communities.

Why are your goals important?

We are all siblings-in-arms, LGBTQ+ and allies alike. Our hobby spaces are how we escape from “the real world,” and those community spaces need to be safe and kind for all of us. No one, regardless of identity, should fear sharing space in our make-believe worlds. Together, we have the power to make our corner of the world a better place.

What does Fabulous Marines do with my donation?

Since the beginning, transparency and trust have been top priorities. None of the donation money ever touches our hands and goes straight to The Trevor Project.

This is why we have chosen to work with fundraising platforms which clearly support these goals, as well as ensure there are no transaction fees associated with the donations whenever possible.

Can I win any prizes or unlock a stretch goal with my donation?

Some of our official fundraising creators have raffles and giveaways, but our genuine gratitude is primary prize. Everyone involved is an unpaid volunteer, and any expenses come out of our own pockets.

What has your organization accomplished to date?

In the first two years we raised $33,044.03 for The Trevor Project. We aim to raise another 10k in 2023, our third year running.

We’ve heard many heartwarming stories from creators and community members alike expressing not only their desire to be welcomed in our hobby spaces, but how the outreach of the yearly fundraising campaign has fostered the sense of security needed for them to “come out” to fellow community members in the minipainting and tabletop wargaming spaces.

How can donors help other than making financial contributions?

Paint along with us! Make posts on social media with #FabulousMarines, like and share official posts from Fabulous Marines contributors, follow Fabulous Marines creators, and in general show love and support to the LGBTQ+ members of our hobbying community.

Why The Trevor Project?

The Trevor Project launch has worked to build a safer, more-inclusive world for the past twenty-five years. Their crisis counselors are trained to answer calls, chats, or texts from LGBTQ+ young people who reach out on a free, confidential hotline when they are struggling with issues such as coming out, LGBTQ+ identity, depression, and suicide. They also provide education, peer support, legal advocacy, and other tools, all in pursuit of their vision of a world where all LGBTQ+ young people see a bright future for themselves.

Many Fabulous Marines participants wish they had a resource like The Trevor Project when they were growing up and figuring things out. We understand the importance of helping people with feeling accepted and offering guidance during the turmoil of figuring things out about themselves and their relationships with others.

Additionally, we know the value of having resources available to help understand how best to support loved ones. We believe education on the topics of sexualities and genders is necessary for the entirety of the community as a whole, allies and LGBTQ+ folks alike.
